QE11 HOSPITAL

URGENT CARE CENTRE

When to use this service?

When the problem is not a 999 emergency but you need medical help FAST:-

  • you think you need to go to A&E but are unsure

  • you don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call

  • you need health information or reassurance about what to do next

What will happen?

A fully trained adviser will ask you some questions to assess your symptoms. They will then give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you straightaway to the local service that can help you best. That could be A&E, a walk-in centre, a community nurse, an emergency dentist or a chemist.

Alternatively, they may transfer you directly to either an experienced nurse or a paramedic for telephone advice or they may book you an appointment with an out-of-hours GP at one of the local hospitals.

If the adviser thinks you need an ambulance, they will immediately arrange for one to be sent to you.

Tel: 111

Outside of surgery opening times our answering machine will tell you the number to contact.

After 6:30pm weekdays, all weekends and bank holidays, calls are taken by the Herts Out-Of-Hours Service (HOOHS)

This is only for emergencies that cannot wait until the surgery reopens. It runs an appointment system and is not a walk-in service. It is staffed by a co-operative of local GP's and operates from a base at QEII Hospital. You will be asked to attend the bases at Hertford County Hospital or QEII, unless telephone advice is sufficient. Priority is given to urgent problem
